Bonded By Blood: Feed the beast

13/06/08  ||  Euthanatos

If you don’t get the references “Bonded By Blood” and “Feed the Beast” immediately, get the fuck out of here right now. You’re not worthy. For those that remain, let me point out that like their idols, Bonded by Blood are also from California, and yes, they do fucking rock. Or thrash, rather. When one decides to blatantly pay homage to an all-time great, one has to keep in mind that there is a very fine line between being influenced and ripping off. While Bonded by Blood sounds a lot like Exodus, they are not a copy cat; their sound is refreshing, modern and actually better than recent Exodus. Yeah, I said it, so fucking what.

The vocals are a good place to start. While kinda sounding like Baloff and kinda sounding like Zetro, Jose “Aladdin” Barrales (Aladdin is a hilarious nickname, props) has his own thing going own, a very eighties-ish snarl that never quite turns into a growl, maintaining aggressiveness and keeping things fresh at the same time. Even though these guys are just kids, the guitar work is stellar. The riffs are thrash as fuck and the guitar solos are a model of how to be creative and not-gay in thrash metal. Listen to the title-track for a sample of those.

But what really made me orgasm multiple times was the last track off of “Feed the Beast”: a thrash metal version of the theme from Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles. I piss myself laughing every god damn time. Brilliant. It is very pleasing to get acquainted with bands like Warbringer and Bonded by Blood. Mere lads coming of age brutally assaulting our ears with top-notch thrash metal. The American scene can be very proud of these newcomers, hopefully the fans will appreciate them as much as I do.

The cover: Very cool comic like drawing of someone that looks like Danzig carrying a fucked up bloody corpse towards a huge-ass devil-god. And the scenery is a leveled Los Angeles, which is always a nice thought to have.

8 Exodussss, army of the people out of 10.
